BMS Names Dr. Harald Hampel SVP, Global Neuroscience Head

Bristol Myers Squibb has appointed its new senior vice president and worldwide head of medical affairs, neuroscience.

Bristol Myers Squibb (BMS) has announced Harald Hampel, MD, as its new Senior Vice President and Worldwide Head of Medical Affairs, Neuroscience. Hampel’s appointment took effect Jan. 12, 2026.

Hampel, a board-certified psychiatrist, is recognized as an influential leader in brain health. Prior to his appointment by BMS, he was Chief Medical Officer and Senior Vice President, Neurology, at Eisai. Hampel is also the founding President of the Alzheimer Precision Medicine Initiative. Additionally, he has secured 12 patents relating to diagnostics and biomarkers for psychiatric, neurodegenerative, and neuroinflammatory disorders.

Hampel’s Neuroscience and Alzheimer’s Work

BMS said Hampel’s work has directly influenced international frameworks for the biological definition of Alzheimer’s disease. At Eisai, he supported development, approval, and successful launches of the first disease-modifying Alzheimer’s treatment.

“Harald is one of the rare leaders whose work has changed how neurodegenerative disorders and neuropsychiatric conditions are diagnosed and treated worldwide,” Tania Small, MD, Senior Vice President and Head of Global Medical Affairs, BMS, said. “This appointment reflects our ambition at BMS and strengthens our ability to turn science into real progress for patients who have waited far too long for better answers and better lives.”

“BMS is uniquely positioned to shape the future of brain health,” Hampel said. “Its recent advances in neuropsychiatry are just the beginning. I’m excited to help drive the next wave of precision neuroscience.”

BMS in the News

Meanwhile, BMS made more news in addition to Hampel’s appointment. The company agreed to a strategic collaboration with Immunai. This partnership supports BMS clinical development efforts by applying Immunai’s AI-powered operating system to gain deep insights into patient immune responses, informing clinical decision-making.

BMS was also among the nine major pharmaceutical companies to agree with the administration of U.S. President Donald Trump in December 2025 to lower drug prices for Americans to the lowest price offered in other developed nations. This adherence to the Trump administration’s “most-favored-nation” mandate followed five previous company agreements. In January 2026, Johnson & Johnson became the latest to join the list.
